Le Random

Here’s the thing: I’ve got a bunch of tee-tiny stories and pictures I want to show you and there’s no theme, no neat little way to tie them up in a bow. This is our life, In Random (but if you say it in French, it sounds classier.)

IMG_5718-WM

These are the sort of photos I find if I walk away from my phone for too long. The kids put my sleep mask on Finn and took 80 pictures of him.

IMG_5694-WM

Sam’s copywork involved a verse about loving one another and living together with tenderness. He wrote at the bottom of it “Boys are up. Girls are down. Boys rule!”

Yea, I totally made him copy that verse three more times.

IMG_5705-WM

This is my Mira. She and Willa are really into coloring right now. That’s fine as along as they can’t find the markers…

IMG_5697-WM

Finn has decided he’s a “sleep with his blanket over his head” kind of guy. I check on him incessantly, because we mommies are insane, but no amount of begging or rearranging his blanket will change his preference. He always wraps himself up like this by the time I come back. (And, yes, he can breathe just fine.)

IMG_5710-WM

Andrew had an overnight trip this week and I needed to entertain the troops. Thanks to all of you Facebook friends, we managed a sock war and an indoor scavenger hunt. I tried to take pictures of the sock war, but the kids kept hitting me in the head with socks. I decided to be IN the moment… plus, I couldn’t let them BEAT ME.

IMG_5711-WM

I introduced the kids to Newsies and we ate popcorn with chocolate chips in it. They’re still singing all the songs from the movie, which means that I have fulfilled my purpose as a mother. “I’m the King of New Yawkkkkkk!”

IMG_5713-WM

We finished our fatherless-weekend with a doughnut run (and some Starbucks for Mommy.) Most of the kids were still in pj’s and nobody wore their shoes. That’s what makes it fun!

And speaking of fun, these are my people.

IMG_5704-WM

I generally only get them all together when there’s food involved, so that’s when I snap the pictures. I love them. In all their Le Random glory.

The Ordinary Extraordinary

with apologies to Heather of the EO for toying with her name…

Another week that has me spinning like a top. But it’s full of all sorts of good things. Things that seem like such ordinary rites of passage for kids are happening and they feel pretty extraordinary in all their ordinariness.

Ellen is taking a ballet camp. Her head may explode with happy.

IMG_5481-WM

We have our first house pets (since Samson), although they’re really just house guests. We’re baby-sitting our neighbors’ fish. Hours of entertainment for my little people and I don’t have to clean the fish bowl? Yes, please.

IMG_5494-WM

Ian showed off his mad cooking skillz and made pita pizzas for lunch one day. He’s gonna make a great daddy since he can make pizzas smile.

IMG_5477-WM

Sam is on another Lego kick. They’ve all been “inventing” things this week as we’ve studied Robert Fulton and his inventions. This is Sam’s latest pirate ship.

IMG_5468-WM

Finn tried out a bath in the big bathtub. He hated it. Lesson learned.

IMG_5465-WM

I finally bit the bullet and began potty training Willa. I know it’s a bit late, but I’ve been busy. I’ve got an extra set of hands here to help me this week because I still wasn’t sure how to balance nursing and schooling with running to the potty every five minutes.

Best decision ever.

IMG_5482-WM

My little pixie far exceeded my expectations and not only stayed mostly dry, she even TOLD me when she needed to go. And she did the “major business” in the potty tonight, too. She earned herself a Reese’s Cup.

Mira wasn’t too pleased to learn she couldn’t have the same candy as her sister. I told her when she pooped in the potty, she could have one, too. Which would explain this little episode in hilarity:

IMG_5497-WM

It didn’t get the result she wanted, but it sure made me smile.

These are the things that make my head spin and my heart full this week. What sort of ordinaries feel extraordinary to you tonight?

p.s. I didn’t forget Adam. He’s been under the weather for awhile now and, sadly, mostly sits and coughs. Stupid asthma. But he’s got a birthday coming. And I’m in PARTY PLANNING MODE. Gonna be fun!!!

Road Tripping Down Memory Lane

The three girls took a jaunt with Finn and me this Saturday to visit Aubrey. (Mira was asleep when I snapped this photo.)

IMG_5455-WM

While we were there, Aubrey gave me the handprints that we had done of Mira months ago.

IMG_5463-WM

She also gave me some of Sam and Ian that she made years ago. Sob. My babies!

IMG_5464-WM

I had a quick errand to run and left my people with Aubrey’s people. This is the first time we’ve left Mira with anyone other than The Approved Few. When I came back, Mira was asleep in Sara Grace’s lap. I think she’s gonna be just fine, y’all.

IMG_5452-WM

I was in a hurry to hit the road before Finn’s next feeding, so I tossed everyone in the car and headed out. As I pulled on to the interstate, swigging my large iced tea, I had a flashback to almost exactly five years ago. I was a nursing mother with four kids. We were in between states, living with my family in a town two hours from Andrew’s job, house hunting, and generally insane.

I would take long road trips with the kids by myself and would have to go on a liquid fast because I couldn’t stop to pee. I couldn’t logistically figure out how to get four kids three and under into a bathroom stall with me, so my plan was to just drive to the bitter end or explode trying.

The end result was pretty epic blog fodder. These blog posts usually ended with me pulled over on the side of the road at a particular liquor store, nursing a baby.

Five years later, I giggled at the memory, pondered where life has taken us, and kept driving. Then Finn took up to caterwauling.

Fortunately, wouldn’t you know it, my very favorite liquor store was on the horizon.

IMG_5457-WM

And so, sure enough, once again, Wayne’s Package Store saved the day for this solo parenting excursion. A quick search revealed that I’ve used it as an emergency stop off point for several babies. Who knew it would become such a part of my children’s legacy?

I wonder if Wayne’s could use this as a marketing strategy…

The Root Of Sisterly Affection

During small group today, Mira fell asleep in an obliging set of arms. (It’s not that our meetings are boring, it’s just that we interrupt her nap time to have them. Really.) After we finished our study, Mira was laid down next to her very sleepy sister for a snooze.

IMG_5424-WM

Willa woke up before Mira did.

IMG_5421-WM

And was happy to see her sister by her side.

IMG_5411-WM

And, well, nothing says “sisterly affection” like doing a little split-end patrol.

iPhoning It In

The days are so full and passing so quickly that I honestly had to pull up the pictures on my iPhone just to remember what is happening. Here’s what I found today:

IMG_4945-WM

Finn is at the in-between stage where he will still sit around in a swing or a bouncy seat, but he’s also beginning to need a bit more stimulation. So there are now no less than seven baby implements wandering around the downstairs for his entertainment.

I pulled out the exersaucer and while Finn finds it a bit overwhelming still, the rest of my kids think its a fantastic toy… and it plays music. As if we need any more noise in this house. I spend on average 97 minutes a day reminding the taller kids “The exersaucer is NOT FOR YOU.”

IMG_4946-WM

Sam’s obsession with acquiring money to acquire Stuff continues. If he finds something he simply must have, he finds odd jobs around the house to perform until he can buy it. His latest entrepreneurial brain wave came when he offered to kill the flies that come in the house from the millions of times the kids leave the doors open.

His fly-murdering ways earned him this snorkel set. Or, as he calls it, his “snort-hole mask.”

I had to make him quit wearing the flippers in the house before he killed himself. Or me.

IMG_4948-WM

I posed Mira for this picture for an article I’m writing, but it reminded me of an “incident” from yesterday. She pooped in her diaper and removed it during nap time. I pulled her out of her bed and went into the bathroom only to discover that NONE of the lightbulbs in the kids’ bathroom work and nobody had mentioned it to the grown-ups. So I had to remove the poop from Mira in the dark.

Mira got a poorly lit shower, we soaked the bathroom, and I got drenched. Ten minutes later, she was dressed, I wiped her bed down, and we went on with life.

It reminded me of all the times the twins played in their poop while they were potty training and how many showers (albeit ones with lights) they endured. Funny, it used to make me crazy. And while I don’t really enjoy the poop now, Mira’s incident was barely a blip on my radar.

I’m not bragging about it. I say that to encourage all of us with the thought that some day, whether it’s because our kids grow up or because we have so many we get desensitized, but ONE DAY, all of the poop our people produce will not concern us.

That’s something to hold on for.

What story is your phone telling YOU this week?

Prayers and Podiatry

I’ve mentioned before that Mira has a “leg length discrepancy.” It means several big surgeries in her future, but for now, all it means is that she walks on her tippy-toes.

Correction: she runs/dances/twinkles/jumps on her tippy-toes. A 10 percent difference in leg lengths doesn’t slow her down one bit.

Now that she can get around just fine, her doctor wants her to have a shoe lift so that she will learn to walk on flat feet. I took Mira to get measured for her lift a few weeks ago. She did fine in the waiting room but as soon as we walked into the examining room, she burst into tears. She knows a doctor’s office when she sees one.

So it was with dread and trepidation that we set off yesterday to pick up her shoes. We asked several friends to pray for us and for Mira during that time. I hate seeing my girl sad and scared and nothing makes her revert back to the sad little girl we brought home a year and a half ago than a trip to the doctor’s office.

We were ushered back to the room immediately. Mira was tense, but I let her hold on to the iPad and our technician promised her he wouldn’t touch her. He just handed me the shoe and I tried to put it on her foot.

Tried is the operative word.

In the two weeks we waited for her lift to be made, she outgrew her shoes. Hooray for good nutrition!

I asked the tech if this meant I’d have to pay for a second lift to be made. The tech offered to get his manager.

A few minutes later, this big hulk of a man walked into our room. He shook my hand and then began speaking to Mira. “Let me see your shoes, Princess.”

She obligingly held up her foot, which surprised me. She wasn’t smiling, but she wasn’t crying either. Progress.

Mr. Manager reached out to touch Mira’s shoe and she fell apart. Before her tears had even hit her cheek, and before I could stop him, this big man scooped her up into his arms and laid her on his chest. “Oh, sweetheart, it’s okay. We’re going to fix it. You’re alright.”

He laid her back to look up at him and wiped her tears from her face.

He spoke to me while keeping his eyes on Mira, “We won’t charge you for the next lift. We’ll fix it for free, okay?”

I’m not sure who was charming who but it was working out in our favor.

The panic in my chest that hit when he first picked her up began to abate.

Mira obliged the room with her cooperation while they measured again and discussed the best way to even her out. She wouldn’t smile at anyone, but she would wave, give them five, and even whisper a “thank you” when they reassured us they would make things right.

We left the office and made a flying trip to a nearby shoe store for a pair of shoes that fit. (The shoe store is nearby, but since I still get completely lost in this town, it took us awhile to actually arrive.) Fortunately, I had a friend with me to help with Finn. (The rest of the kids were at home with Andrew.) I nursed the baby in the car while she went to grab us lunch and then we went back downtown to drop off the new shoes.

It was a crazy and chaotic morning, but my Mira was peaceful. After she was properly bear hugged, she never complained or whimpered when others touched her feet or picked her up without my permission. (Trust me, I was RIGHT THERE to reach for her if she needed me. My inner Mama Bear was on high alert.) She just played with my iPhone or ate her grilled cheese or took a catnap in her carseat, all without a word.

IMG_4888-WM

When we pulled into the driveway at last, she went inside and greeted her people. And then she sang and danced her little heart out for the rest of the afternoon. She didn’t pout, she didn’t have a “sad day.” She never said another word about it.

That’s the power of prayer, y’all. Can I get a Hallelujah?

Some Family Business

We’re family here, after all, right?

IMG_4903-WM

First up:  Our big winner this month was

Rebecca M.

who won the ten dollar gift certificate from Cheeky Maiden Soap, the All About Homophones e-book, AND her very own copy of Praying Proverbs 31 For Your Daughters by Tracy Glockle! Congrats!

Tracy generously offered two more lucky commenters a copy of her book (which I’ve started reading, by the way, and I like it!) Those winners are

Susan C. (who is getting ready to move)

and

Lesley (who took her kids to the airport and the zoo all in one weekend and deserves a medal!)

Keep an eye on your inboxes for your prizes!

And now, a thank you. I had no less than six commenters tell me we should buy Puddlejumpers for our kids to use while swimming. You people were right. Adam put his on and jumped right in, suddenly a fearless expert at swimming. Willa began bobbing around the pool on her own. And Mira enjoyed the sensation of floating, even if her teeth were chattering.

Have a happy weekend, Everybody!

The Puppy Days of Summer

The Dog Days of Summer come later, right? But what do you call the beginning of summer? Puppy Days?

Even thought we’re revving up to start our school year, it definitely has the feel of puppy days of summer around here. Everything just feels… light-hearted.

IMG_4874-WM

We are carrying on with our swimming plans very nicely. The kids are having a ball.

IMG_4885-WM

And it’s sort of nice for us parents now, too. I’m really enjoying sunsets at the pool.

IMG_4882-WM

Finn enjoys napping, when he’s not eating.

IMG_4871-WM

Finn naps solely to maintain his girth and Winston Churchill jowls. All of that eating he does must not go to waste.

IMG_4875-WM

Last week, we took the kids out for fancy organic popsicles.

IMG_4842-WM

For you locals, Steel City Pops is operated by some friends of ours and they’re selling out of popsicles like crazy. Go try ‘em. They come Mira-recommended.

IMG_4846-WM

Andrew and I are working our way through a new cookbook. I watched some episodes of Jamie Oliver’s Meals in Minutes on tv a while ago and thought it looked like fun. We bought the cookbook and are enjoying tackling the recipes.

They aren’t really “30 minute meals,” it’s more like 45 minute meals. But we’re pretty excited about the complete dinners we’re getting on the table a couple of times a week. And it’s fun to do together. Since the food is ready quickly, I just wait until Andrew is off work and then we have dinner on the table in under an hour. Makes it easier on everybody. We’ve got a long list of recipes we want to try from it.

I’ll keep you posted on how we do.

So.

Tell me about your puppy days of summer.

How YOU doin’?

Candy For Your Eyes

Today is Embrace the Camera day. And I tried, I did. There are at least four of my seven kids in this picture with me.

Photo on 5-2-12 at 6.05 PM #2-WM

This one cracks me up. Mira wanted in on the action.

Photo on 5-2-12 at 6.08 PM #2-WM

And since I’m not the only parent around here who needs to embrace the camera…

IMG_4543-WM

However, we are both aware that we aren’t really the cute ones around the house. So here’s the eye candy we really want to show you:

(these two adore each other. I adore them. see how nicely that works?)

You may now go on to have a beautiful day. You’re welcome.

p.s. Thanks for the pictures, Abbi.

Vitatelevision

So a month or so ago, a friend asked if I would post more video of Sam drumming. And I was happy to oblige, although not exactly in a timely fashion.

Sam generally has the attention span of a small insect, but I am happy to report that he plays his drums every single day without prompting. He puts his headphones on and disappears into his own little world of rhythm.

He hasn’t had any lessons or training, so he’s just making it up as he goes, but we’ve been told that’s the way to start. We will give him our iPods and let him play along with songs from church or other music he likes. Today I finally got around to making a video of him. I believe this will give you a pretty accurate picture of what life is like around here at any given moment.

Because shouldn’t every day be filled with pesky little brothers and interpretive dance?

And then, because I got stuck nursing Finn while filming and was just sitting watching my crazy people with camera in hand (I can’t tell you how many outtakes there are of this lousy video because the kids kept interrupting me with “Finn needs you!”), Mira treated me to this little gem. I swear I didn’t put her up to it.
