Celebrating Ellen

We had a big birthday celebration this weekend. Our Ellen turned FIVE. And we partied it up BIG, y’all.

I shall now punish your eyeballs with pictorial proof…

Andrew rented a helium tank so we could fill her rooms with balloons while she slept the night before her birthday.

75 balloons and a round of “Happy Birthday” later, Ellen started her day with a good Daddy cuddle.

Of course, we made cake.

Ellen sported a princess tiara, necklaces, and a smile all day long. She picked a “rainbow” theme for her birthday, so we filled the house with multi-colored everything, including sprinkles.

We gave the kids a treat with their “birthday pizza.” We rimmed their glasses with sprinkles, via this picture on Pinterest. It was a HUGE hit.

When Ellen turned five, she gave up sucking her thumb and her beloved “boinket.” To celebrate and encourage her resolve, one of her gifts was a date with Mommy to get her nails done.

Oh, how I adore that sweet little hand.

We kept the party going today with cake and friends. Nothing fancy, but we definitely needed help eating that tall cake!

I love that we got to celebrate our girl for a whole weekend. It was so fun to plan for months (thank you, Pinterest!) and think about what Ellen would really love. I don’t think any of us slept the night before her birthday, we were all so excited to enjoy the day with her. She ate it up and we’re so grateful to everyone who helped us party this weekend.

Happy Birthday, Ellen! We love you!

p.s. Don’t forget to guess when the baby is coming! We’ve decided to pick one random winner from the commenters, as well. So you’ve got TWO chances, but you must guess before Thursday!

You didn’t show us the inside of the cake–is it rainbow inside too? My little girl wants a rainbow cake. I’m trying to decide if I’m brave enough to try it. Probably not, since her birthday is the day after I get back from Blissdom. And the shapes on the cake–are they fondant or something?

  3. LoraLynn says:

Nicole – No, we just did one flavor inside. I did my standard chocolate cake recipe (from Ina Garten). I bought pre-colored fondant and cut the shapes out. In order to get those deep rainbow colors, you have to buy the fondant. If I’d made it, it would have been pastel. I can never get homemade fondant dark enough. And while this cake was “easy,” I broke it up into two days and I wouldn’t want to try to do it after Blissdom! (If Finn doesn’t come beforehand, I’ve got a ticket. Maybe I’ll see you there!)

What a fun party! I love the sprinkles on the milk glasses idea. Might have to use that one soon! Happy FIVE Miss Ellen, with your long hair and big smile!

what a fun bday celebration! I think it’s great to make a big deal out of birthdays. It’s my goal to make my boys feel super special on their bdays. So, question: how much does it cost to rent a helium tank? I usually buy ten latex balloons from the grocery store for each kid’s birthday–costs me about 12 bucks. But 75 balloons!? that would be awesome awesome!
here’s my guess for baby F:
    3/1 11am. 7lbs. 9oz.
good luck! Hope you don’t have to overcook him (:

EllP – Well, it was 40 bucks for a tank that would fill 125 balloons. We got to keep it for three days. Super fun!

I remember when we were belly buddies with our sweet little girls. 5 is so very grown up. Happy Birthday Ellen!!

Awesome! I love the sprinkle idea!
