I’ve been working on “enjoying the moment.” I’m trying to stop and take in the fun, the crazy, the inane. So after the 23rd straight day of rain (or thereabouts), I threw a quilt over the furniture and watched the kids play in their tent. Adam was so proud of it, he asked to take a picture. I let him have my camera. This was perhaps a moment of just sheer insanity.
Still, he was awfully proud of himself.
Later, Willa needed me to nurse her Right That Very Minute And Not A Second Later, so I set the kids to working on their own lunch. They’ve done this before, but this time, they took a bit more artistic license with the process. I sat in the living room and listened to the contented destruction of the kitchen. It was a peaceful sort of implosion.
I don’t know how healthy any of it was, but they were happy. And messy.
I never did decipher what Ian was doing in the sink, but the tell-tale chocolate around his mouth (it was chocolate peanut butter, they got into MY stash) says he ate his fair share of… whatever they call this:
Ellen would have stood there all day, smearing peanut butter on a tiny little cracker and her entire hand.
She made a relatively small mess, considering she’s only two and I armed her with a butter knife.
Later in the day, when the world fell apart and every sound throbbed through my ears like a gunshot, I reminded myself that I was going to write this post and I’d better take my own advice and “enjoy the moment.”
So I reached for my camera…
And I did.

Sam looks so stinking cute with his little glasses!

I say happy + messy = best kind of moments! Good for you for making sure pictures were taken. Fantastic problem solving for the endless days of rain, too!

Ellen is looking pretty snazzy in her AU cheer skirt and on-the-wrong-foot-saddle shoes. Happy times, friend.

What a good mommy you are!

Looks like they all decided to be Auburn fans today in their orange shirts & Ellen in her cheerleading outfit. Oh my, wait until Willa can stand on her can and help them.

Thanks for a great reminder. Someday everything will stay neat and clean and the house will be too quiet.

Good for you, getting the camera out AND getting a post up. My camera is full, and I can’t remember where the cord is to download the pictures. But I have been stopping and taking more, stopping and realizing that each day, chaotic or not, is never going to come again.
They look like they’re doing great at feeding themselves. An excellent life skill.

love Ellen’s cheer outfit!

looks like they had a blast!
i bet they felt pretty darn grown up in that kitchen…

You are significantly braver than I am. Maybe you only reach the sort of courage it takes to let your kids make their own lunches when you have five of them. I only have three, so I’m still a big wimp.

Auburn??? Really??? I guess we can’t all be perfect (and cheer for Bama!). Thank you for reminding me that I need to enjoy the moments and little ones…even when they are throwing themselves on the floor because I gave a work assignment.

Abbie - Um, WAR EAGLE. But actually, like most of Ellen’s cute clothes, my neighbor gave her that dress. It’s her fave and she wears it often. And I happen to think she has excellent taste. :=)

She does look adorable…even if it is orange and blue
I love the cheer shoes!

Yes to that mess. Precious and good memories.

Just wondering if you always color code your kids?
9.22.2009
Um, they actually all dress themselves. Well, Ellen picked her dress out. I didn’t even notice they matched until I was fixing the pictures! But they usually do match themselves in some form or fashion.

I’m surrounded by dustbunnies that are threatening the cats, last week’s cereal under the kitchen table, full handprints going up the stairs, laundry that smells fungus laden, and I read this.
Thank you.
