Spaceman Sam

As Sam has grown into being five years old, his imagination has taken flight.  I was a pretty imaginative kid, but I was an only child, so I sit and try  to picture my imagination squared and it makes me tremble and giggle all at once.  Sam doesn’t mind being on his own (also one of my favorite things) and he can be a bit dreamy.  Since I started asking the boys to have some alone time, he looks forward to hanging out in my closet for an hour during rest time.  I told you about his very own rocket ship in my closet.  A few days later, we found that he had put some of Willa’s baby clothes on his stuffed animals.  He used a sock for a hat.

And he put a sheep in a shoe.

And he was very proud.

He’s definitely the leader of our little posse.  He’s the brains of the operation and he’s full of ideas.  This was what he and Ian did during naptime the next day, when I let them stay up and play quietly together.

They made a traffic jam on the couch.  Complete with an access road.

And while I know that this is certainly not mensa material, it’s funny to see my babies becoming children.  There’s still plenty of babies who need me, but there is this new creature called Boy With Ability To Hit The Toilet that I am just getting to know.

For all of his growing up, Sam is still a space cadet. On the way home tonight, the kids were listening to an audio recording of Encyclopedia Brown.  (Did y’all read those when you were kids?  I can still remember at least part of the solutions to most puzzles.)  Anyway, the story mentioned the resident “bad kid in town,” Buggs Meany.  The fellas were in the back discussing how unkind Buggs was and Sam piped up, “Yea, we kill bugs.  They’ll bite us.”

That’s my (violent yet confused) boy.

I loved Encyclopedia Brown books! Interesting that you’re an only child - did that inspire you to do things differently yourself?
